Lorcan

The moment I locked eyes with Brayden, I knew there wouldn't be any talking my way out of this.

He'd come here having already made up his mind.

If I wanted to get off this rock alive, then I was going to have to fight my way off it.

If I'd been alone, I could've done that easily.

But with Cintha by my side, I had to think through my actions.

Control.

Calculation.

There was probably another door leading to a secret passageway back in the server room. But what were the chances of us being able find it before they shot us?

Slim to none.

Which meant the only way out of here would be through the door they'd all just come in.

Good. I was more than ready for a fight.

With a low growl, I released Cintha's hand, pushed her back to the smaller room for protection, and readied myself.

I launched myself towards them, jumping over the desk with ease.

The guards opened fire, and I laughed, letting the joy of battle fill my veins as I twisted past the first few bolts, the lasers scorching the permasteel walls.

Smoke and the sound of crackling electronics filled the small room as I tossed the first of the guards against the wall.

Without waiting to watch him slide down into a crumpled heap, I turned to strike at the next.

That one caught my shoulder with three bolts before I reached him.

A good try, but not enough.

Grabbing his blaster, I struck him with it, knocking him sideways, out of my way.

As I moved on to the next, a small frightened whimper from Cintha reached my ears, and I spun.

“That's enough, don't you think?” Teldra held a blaster pressed against Cintha’s neck.

Dammit. There had been another passage into the secured room. Instead of sending Cintha out of danger, I’d delivered her straight into our enemy’s hands.

A snarl tore through me.

“I think you should stay still.” Teldra’s face was impassive, appraising.

“Don't listen to her,” Cintha hissed, fury flaring her nostrils. “I'll be fine.”

I could hear reinforcements arriving behind me, surrounding Brayden.

I took a step towards them, then another.

Cintha squeaked as the sister pressed the barrel harder against her tender skin, and I froze.

“I'm sorry,” she whispered. “I don't know where she came from, I wasn't watching.”

I’d failed her.

My brothers would be here soon, but it wouldn't be fast enough to save her from whatever Brayden and Teldra dreamed up.

The bitter thought twisted in my gut.

Shuffling behind me, Brayden appeared in my peripheral vision.

“I don't know what you thought you were doing,” he spat. “Probably trying to take everything for yourself. But Horg and Durl were loyal to me, they wouldn't play your games.”

What?

I shook my head. At least he still had no clue as to what was really going on. Having disabled us, maybe he'd relax, think the threat was over.

Fine, I could play with the idiot for a while longer.

“You got me,” I shrugged. “I just wanted to have a look at your files, see if what you were telling me was the truth.
